Clunky 90's Bathroom to Spa-Like Ensuite
Material-drenched primary ensuite retreat in Calgary.
Project Overview
The main goal in this renovation was to create a modern and functional primary suite. This included a full gut renovation of the ensuite bathroom and moving walls in the bedroom improved functionality in the entire space. Not only did the clients get a spa-like bathroom but also additional closet space and a fully furnished bedroom.
Location: Signal Hill, Calgary
Project Type: Primary Suite Renovation
Size: Approx. 220 sq ft
The Vision
The goal was to create spa-like space for our Calgary clients. The goals were to double the size of the shower and vanity while still having room for a freestanding tub. We were also tasked with finding space for two more closets - this was a tall order but we pulled it all off!

Client Testimonial
"Kim created a new vision and design for our Primary Suite that seamlessly incorporated our previous partial renovations. Her attention to detail and service was sensitive to our needs. She helped us understand the emotional ups and downs of a renovation and find humor along the way."
The Process

Concept
The main goal in this renovation was to create a more modern and functional ensuite bathroom and ultimately improve the functionality of the entire primary suite. We also wanted to carry the selections from an earlier phase into the suite. We used large format tile, soft whites and warm wood accents.

Drawings
Space planning was key on this project. We needed to map out all the key elements while adding additional storage in the bedroom. The floor plan drawings allowed the entire team visualize where each component would go and ensure there was smooth installation.

Build
This ensuite was gutted to expose all the odd angles and allow us to straighten everything out and maximize every inch. We were able to utilize the existing plumbing footprint just swamping out what went where. With the walls straightened out we were able to add a full size ‘his’ closet and a dedicated linen closet in addition to the double vanity and large walk-in shower.
The Spaces
Freestanding Soaker Tub
A key element to any spa-like space is a soaker tub. The client got her wish with this freestanding tub and a nearby shelf for candles and incense to set the mood. We wrapped the large format tile up the wall to create a 'material-drenched' space.
Double Vanity
The other big ask was to fit in a double vanity. We were able to increase the size of the vanity by two feet with plenty of room for two sinks. The vanity was completed with wood framed mirrors and chrome faucets, hardware and wall sconces.
Walk-In Shower
The previous shower was an oddly angled space that didn’t really function well. We were able to create a spacious walk-in shower with plenty of storage space. We continued the ‘material drenching’ with the large format tile going up the walls and onto the ceiling. The shower was finished off with a mosaic tile for the floor and niches..
Favourite Find
The final styling and decorating of this primary suite allowed us to finish off this space for the client. We were able to source just the right furniture, bedding and decor to give this room a magazine-like finish!
