Project Overview

Travertine House Dream Kitchen

Modern European home in suburban Calgary.

Project Overview

Our client wanted an updated kitchen within the existing footprint. We were able to create a modern kitchen while maintaining a timeless transitional style. The cabinetry and appliances were updated as well as all of the finishes. Not only was the final result beautiful, but the client had all the modern features she was looking for.

Location: Signal Hill, Calgary

Project Type: Kitchen Renovation

Size: Approx. 300 sq ft

The Vision

The client wanted an updated kitchen with improved functionality without adding to the existing footprint. This included extending the island and creating a clear focal point.

Client Testimonial

"If you are looking for an experienced designer who can anticipate industry trends while directing choices that incorporate function and budget, we recommend Kim Joy Design. Kim was essential to our team, supporting us through a large renovation."

The Process

Concept

The concept started with the colour palette, to make the existing travertine tile feel intentional. The earthy grey cabinet colour, the creamy picket and the prominent vein in the countertop complemented the scheme. The final component were the large island pendants to add some drama.

Drawings

The drawings helped the client understand how the design would all come together, particularly the oversized island pendants. Having detailed drawings takes out the guess work for everyone involved.

Build

To accommodate the wish list all but two walls were moved.  We were able to include everything from the wish list with a few extras in this Calgary renovation.  We added a main floor laundry and built-ins for the living room and primary suite.  The before and after for this interior design project was dramatic.

The Spaces

Lighting

The island pendants were a signature piece of the design. We needed to find just the right warm black finish that complemented the nickel we used for the hardware. Adding pendants over the island created the focal point that this kitchen was lacking.

Hard Finish Selections

The countertop and the backsplash tile were two major components where there were a lot of great choices to pick from. It came down to finding the right colour and pattern that would complement the existing floor. The other key piece in the colour scheme was the warm grey cabinet colour that brought all the selections together.

Furniture

Furniture in the kitchen should not be overlooked! In addition to all the hard surface selections, we sourced the kitchen island stools and club chairs for the kitchen sitting area. We found just the right size and shape for the stools. The navy and walnut added warmth to the design. The sitting area chairs were just the right size for the nook and also added some softness to an area of the home where it is often all hard surfaces.

Favourite Find

To style this kitchen we sourced from a combination of vintage finds and local shops for just the right decor. We always like to add as many organic elements as possible to make the space feel more alive.
